Emancipation Park

Emancipation Park, located in the heart of New Kingston, Jamaica, stands as a symbol of freedom and cultural identity for the Jamaican people. Inaugurated in 2002, the park serves not only as a recreational space but also as a memorial ground that honours the end of slavery in Jamaica and celebrates the resilience and spirit of its people.

The park spans seven acres, with beautifully landscaped gardens, scenic jogging trails, fountains, and an open-air stage for concerts and cultural performances. Its design reflects the natural beauty of Jamaica, with over 900 trees representing 15 species and a wide array of local plants enhancing its lush, green scenery.

At the entrance of the park stands a striking sculpture titled “Redemption Song” by Jamaican artist Laura Facey. Unveiled at the park’s inauguration, the sculpture takes its name from a song by reggae legend Bob Marley, who himself was a vocal proponent of freedom and emancipation. The sculpture features two nude figures – a male and a female – looking to the skies, symbolizing the triumphant spirit of the emancipated.

The decision to feature nudity in the sculpture sparked considerable public debate, touching on deep-seated issues related to the legacy of slavery, identity, and liberation. Yet, the statue has since become a recognized symbol of the park and the resilience of the Jamaican people.

Emancipation Park was created by the National Housing Trust, a Jamaican government organization, as part of a larger project to enhance the infrastructure and aesthetic appeal of New Kingston. It was envisaged not merely as a space for relaxation and recreation, but as a place that encourages reflection on the country’s history and the journey towards freedom.
