Located just outside the bustling city of Montego Bay, the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary stands as a haven of tranquillity and a testament to Jamaica’s extraordinary biodiversity. Established in 1962 by Lisa Salmon, also known as “the Bird Lady,” the sanctuary has been a refuge for a multitude of bird species, attracting ornithologists and bird lovers from around the globe.
Born into a Jamaican family with a long history of ecological stewardship, Lisa Salmon was deeply passionate about Jamaica’s avifauna. She transformed her home and the surrounding woodland into a sanctuary for birds, both endemic and migrant. Her dedication was instrumental in conserving the diverse bird species of the island and raising awareness about their preservation.
The sanctuary is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers, offering the opportunity to observe and interact with a wide variety of bird species in their natural habitat. It is home to a diverse range of birds, from vibrant hummingbirds and the Jamaican Oriole to the rare Black-throated Blue Warbler and the Doctor Bird, or Swallow Tail Hummingbird, Jamaica’s stunning national bird.
One of the unique features of the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary is the interactive feeding experience. Visitors can hand-feed hummingbirds that are accustomed to human presence. This personal interaction with some of nature’s most enchanting creatures is a truly unforgettable experience.
Since Lisa Salmon’s passing in 2000, the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary has been maintained by her former assistant, Fritz Beckford. Despite the changes, the sanctuary remains dedicated to its mission of preserving and celebrating Jamaica’s avian life.
