The history of Rose Hall dates back to the late 18th century, when it was constructed by John Palmer and his wife Rosa. The plantation house, named after Rosa, was built on 6,600 acres of land, and was one of the grandest in all of Jamaica.
However, it’s not just the grandeur of the house that attracts visitors; Rose Hall is famously associated with the legend of the “White Witch.” This infamous tale revolves around Annie Palmer, who, according to legend, was John and Rosa’s grandniece. Annie is said to have moved to the plantation as a young woman after the death of her parents in Haiti and was later married to John Palmer. Folklore recounts that Annie Palmer possessed black magic powers and used these to control and terrorize her slaves and to dispatch her three husbands.
Stories about the White Witch have contributed to Rose Hall’s fame and notoriety, making it a point of fascination and intrigue. While historians have established that much of the legend is fictional, the tales continue to captivate the imagination of visitors and locals alike.
After changing hands several times over the centuries, Rose Hall fell into disrepair in the early 20th century.
